Michael Conforto comes into this spring look to build off of some of the career-best numbers that he posted in 2020.
But the big storyline revolving around the 28-year-old continues to be about whether or not he and the Mets can reach an agreement on a contract extension before the end of the season.
Conforto, who is currently slated to become a free agent after this season, said on Saturday that he had no new information regarding contract talks to pass on.
“Nothing to report on my end,” Conforto said. “I don’t know if I’m surprised at all, I don’t know how these things work. I’m just focused on playing baseball right now, and we’ll see what happens over the next couple of weeks.”
On Monday, Mets team president Sandy Alderson said that he expects extension talks with both Conforto and Francisco Lindor “will start relatively soon.”
“We’ve had Conforto for many years. He’s not only become an excellent player but also part of, I think, the leadership group within the clubhouse,” Alderson told reporters via Zoom on Monday. “He’s represented the Mets for a long period of time and represented us well. And I think if it’s possible that we will make the effort to try and keep Michael with us.
“With respect to Lindor, we made the trade. It doesn’t mean necessarily that we are guaranteed to have him long-term. But I think we’re committed to talking about it. And I expect that those conversations will start relatively soon in both cases.”
