Jeff Kaplan Confirms Overwatch 2 for BlizzConline 2021
During a recent developer update from Overwatch Director Jeff Kaplan a new free-for-fall map known as Kanezaka was confirmed for the game. The new map will be added to the Overwatch rotation soon as a free-for-all map and it takes place in the shadows of Hanamura. Jeff Kaplan also confirmed that more news about Overwatch 2 would be unveiled in February during BlizzConline 2021. Overwatch is available right now for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC, while Overwatch 2 has no official release date as of now.
“So first the cool thing, we are excited to introduce a brand new free-for-all map,” said Jeff Kaplan in the recent Overwatch developer update. “Now I know a lot of you weren’t expecting this to be coming. As you know, our big focus is Overwatch 2, which we will be talking about more in February with BlizzCon Online coming up.” Kaplan also mentioned an amazing level designer named Morton who made Kanezaka while still learning the development tools that ended up being so good that the Overwatch team wanted to bring it to full production.
“It takes place just below Hanamura, in fact, you can see that Hanamura castle on the hill if you look up,” continued Jeff Kaplan. “It’s not just a random setting, there’s a lot of contextual storytelling we’re doing in this free-for-all map with some easter eggs and some payoff that’s going to come in Overwatch 2… We’re not only going to learn more about our favorite Shimada brothers but possibly some other people as well that relate to that whole group… there’s a lot of easter eggs in the map, not only about future Overwatch lore but some fun stuff in regards to the team that makes the game.
