All 30 MLB teams have until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday night to decide whether or not they will be tendering contracts to pre-arbitration and arbitration-eligible players for the 2021 season.
Here’s an updated look at what the Mets have been up to as it relates to the non-tender deadline …
6:52 p.m.
According to SNY MLB Insider Andy Martino, indications are that the Mets will tender a contract to right-hander Robert Gsellman.
Gsellman pitched in just six games for the Mets in 2020, making four starts as the team dealt with a number of injuries to their starting rotations. The 27-year-old started the season on the IL due to a triceps injury, and then ended the year on the IL after fracturing a rib.
Gsellman struggled in 2020 when he was able to be on the field, pitching to a 9.64 ERA, but he provides the Mets with some versatility, being able to pitch both as a starter and reliever. With the team still having plenty of unknowns when it comes to the 2021 rotation, having a depth piece like Gsellman could go a long way.
6:20 p.m.
The Mets have non-tendered reliever Chasen Shreve, SNY’s Andy Martino has confirmed.
Not tendering a contract to Shreve is an interesting move for the Mets, as he was the team’s primary left-handed option out of the pen in 2020. The 30-year-old pitched in 17 games for the Mets, posting a 3.96 ERA with a 1.160 WHIP. Lefties hit just .063 against Shreve, who struck out 34 total hitters in 25.0 innings.
