An MMO with Bite
Horror and RPG’s are genres that haven’t seen much crossover, and horror MMO’s are even less frequent. The only example I can think of off the top of my mind that comes close is The Secret World, which sees agents of secret societies out into the world to investigate Lovecraftian creatures attacking an island in Maine, or vampire incursions in Transylvania. Sadly, The Secret World never really caught fire with audiences, but The Day Before might just scratch that horror itch you’ve been feeling.
Set in the aftermath of a global pandemic, The Day Before sees you fighting for survival against both the zombie-like infected and hostile human groups – think of it like The Last of Us getting the MMO treatment. The game was announced with a five minute trailer showcasing the visuals, combat, stealth, and crafting mechanics, and you can definitely see the influence from Naughty Dog’s hit franchise, and given that the game includes both PVP and PVE elements they may just have the first MMO since World of Warcraft to come up with a satisfying explanation for why PVP is happening. After all, resources can be scarce mid-pandemic, what do you think the toilet paper situation’s going to be in a post-apocalyptic wasteland?
Actual story details are thin of the ground, but the Steam description reads “You wake up alone in a world you no longer remember, setting out to find answers and the resources to survive.” If you’ve ever woken up an hour after you were supposed to start work, it could be worse: you could sleep through the end of the world as we know it.
We don’t have a release date for The Day Before yet, but you can wishlist it on the Steam page, and hope for a console release down the line.
