World of Warcraft: Shadowlands Launched to Great Success
Activision Blizzard has officially confirmed that World of Warcraft: Shadowlands had one of their most successful expansion launches to date. 3.7 million units of Shadowlands sold around the globe within the first 24-hours after its release last month, beating a previous Blizzard record, and the fastest-selling PC game record of all time. The previous record was Diablo 3 at 3.5 million copies sold in the first 24-hours. World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is available right now for PC and Mac.
World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth recently came to an anticipated close as one of the weakest expansions to date, but it looks like WoW fans don’t feel betrayed, as Shadowlands continues to sell well even beyond the first 24 hours. While every World of Warcraft expansion is successful in bringing lapsed fans back, the trick seems to be in keeping them engaged beyond the first couple of months after launch. For example, both Warlords of Draenor and Battle for Azeroth saw peak player numbers in their early days, with numbers dwindling as content became progressively staler.
“It’s been a huge thrill to enter this whole new dimension of the Warcraft universe together with millions of players around the world,” said Blizzard president J. Allen Brack in a recent statement about World of Warcraft: Shadowlands’ success. Many Blizzard fans have since pointed out that Shadowlands is an expansion to an already existing game (World of Warcraft) meaning that the fastest-selling full game still remains Blizzard’s Diablo 3. While Blizzard has just raised the bar for themselves, it looks like they hold the fastest-selling PC game record no matter how you slice it.
