London Calling
If there’s one thing the success of the Call of Duty series’ Zombies multiplayer mode has taught us, it’s that gamers love mowing down never-ending waves of the undead. Starting tomorrow, the third-person, open-world stealth shooter Watch Dogs: Legion will join the ranks of games that’ll allow you to face off against hordes of zombies with the Legion of the Dead DLC.
Legion of the Dead transforms Watch Dogs: Legion into a 4-player roguelite, as you and your allies try to clear the streets of London of zombies. In a 22-minute gameplay reveal, developers Ubisoft Toronto show off how the hacking-based stealth game has been repurposed to handle a post-apocalyptic survival mode. The ability to swap between different playable characters, a key feature of the base game, is now used to allow the player to take control of a new survivor after death.
In the gameplay, we follow a group of four players as they make their way across a zombie-infested London city. The goal is to find the eight supply packages scattered around the map and transport them safely to an evacuation point, all the while evading the undead. According to Watch Dogs: Legion online director Jean-Pascal Cambiotti, the aim of Watch Dogs: Legion of the Dead is to “expand on existing systems and flip them on its head” to create the rogue-lite experience we’ll be getting. When asked if Legion of the Dead could be developed into a standalone game if it’s popular enough among players, Cambiotti emphasized a desire to “keep an open line of communication with the community and see where they want to take the game mode next”.
It’s not just Legion of the Dead that’s launching tomorrow – Title Update 4.5 is set to add support for a 60fps performance mode on both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. A range of bugs, mostly related to the new DLC character Mina, are due to be fixed, and a brand new Tactical Op will be added in Project OMNI.
Legion of the Dead will launch on June 1st 2021, along with Title Update 4.5.
