A Green Director Indeed
2018’s Tomb Raider reboot movie starring Alicia Vikander was received in a polarizing way. Some say it sucked and some say it was alright. Your ol’ pal Zane is defender of the movie in that I think there were good parts, but there were definitely not-good part as well. So, it may please some (myself included) to hear that a sequel to the Alicia Vikander movie is starting to develop. The 2018 film’s director Roar Uthaug has been replaced by Misha Green, who is making her directorial debut with this untitled Tomb Raider movie.
Misha Green has mostly made her career as a writer. She has written for television shows Heroes, Sons of Anarchy, and co-created Underground, which is a period drama based on the Underground Railroad. More recently, Green she wrote and created the television adaptation of the novel Lovecraft Country, which was also produced by Jordan Peele and J. J. Abrams. With her success as a writer, who has captured the attention and acclaim of viewers, it will be interesting to see what she does with Lara Croft and another film adaptation of Tomb Raider.
Though the 2018 Tomb Raider movie was based on the 2013 Tomb Raider game, the differences were striking. Mathias played by Walton Goggins was a Trinity excavation leader instead of a stranded Solarii cult leader and Queen Himiko carried a deadly disease instead of being a supernatural being. It seems that the films are making the story more grounded in reality and are using science and liberal explanations for myths and legends from the games. The film with Misha Green at the helm will likely loosely follow the story of Rise of the Tomb Raider, so it will be interesting to see where she takes this movie. Hopefully, we get more information on this from the Tomb Raider 25th anniversary celebration. This Tomb Raider movie sequel is currently in pre-production.
