Financial Post journalists have won a second place award and an honourable mention at the Portfolio Management Association of Canada’s 2021 Awards for excellence in investment journalism.

Gabriel Friedman, host of the FP’s Down to Business podcast, took the second place award in the short submission category for an episode that looked at the Reddit trading phenomenon, which sent shares of GameStop Inc. and other so-called meme stocks soaring to unexpected heights earlier this year.

Friedman spoke to a pair of experts for the podcast, David Goldreich of the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and Pauline Shum Nolan from York University’s Schulich School of Management.

Second place prize winners in the long and short submission categories each receive $3,000.

The Post’s Kevin Carmichael and Victor Ferreira are also being recognized with an honourable mention for their investigative work on the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy.

“This year’s outstanding written and audio submissions go above and beyond in addressing the pandemic’s impact on the market and how investors need to move forward,” PMAC President Katie Walmsley said in a statement. “The Awards represent the best investment journalism Canada has to offer.”

This year’s 10th annual edition of the awards, which were designed to encourage investing journalism with the goal of improving the financial literacy of Canadians, was opened to podcasts as well as written stories for the first time.

Prizes will be presented at a virtual ceremony on June 17.

Friedman, Carmichael and Ferreira are all also finalists for SABEW Canada’s Best in Business awards.
