You don’t see this every day.
In fact, nobody’s seen it since 2016.
Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker lined up for a 36-yard field goal Tuesday against the Dallas Cowboys. For the gold standard of NFL kicking, a chip shot from that distance is one of the surest bets in the NFL.
Except on Tuesday, it did not cash. With a chance to tie the game at 10-10 in the second quarter, Tucker instead pulled the kick just outside the left upright — to the shock of everyone aware of Tucker’s handiwork.
For the superstitious among us, blame for the stunning miss will squarely land on Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. The Fox announcers sung Tucker’s praise in the moments before the kick. Buck even said the word “jinx” just as the ball was being snapped.
Here’s how the jinx went down:
Aikman: “If there’s such a thing as automatic from this distance, it’s Justin Tucker, that’s for sure.”
Buck: “Justin Tucker — since 2016 — has made 70 straight inside 40 yards.”
Aikman: “It’s nice when you’ve got a kicker like that you can depend on. We’ll see if he keeps that streak alive here.”
Buck: “I’m just gonna say he is. No announcer’s jinx, come on.”
For Tucker, a three-time Pro Bowler, the miss was just his second this season in 21 attempts and the first inside 50 yards. For anybody whose rooting interest or bankroll was impacted by Tucker’s miss, they know who to blame.
