Is This The Golden Age of Video Game Adaptations?
Well, it’s hard to deny the possibility completely. Not only are we getting more and more games getting adapted for TV and film, but the games themselves are more varied – and the adaptations themselves are getting a lot of love. (Mostly) gone are the days of over the top action and campy fanservice, instead we’re seeing adaptations like Detective Pikachu, The Witcher, or the upcoming The Last of Us.
Still, there’s still room for campy action, as the upcoming Borderlands adaptation hopes to prove. Based on the bestselling sci-fi franchise, Borderlands will be directed by cult favorite Eli Roth (Of Hostel, The Green Inferno, and Cabin Fever fame) and stars, among others, Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart, and now we have word of who’ll be stepping into the shoes of Tiny Tina.
Playing the role will be Ariana Greenblatt, a young actress who’s been making waves in films like Love and Monsters, The One and Only Ivan, and Avengers: Infinity War.
Tiny Tina may only be 13, but don’t overlook her badass credentials. A teenage explosives expert, she escapes from captivity and vows revenge on the people responsible. Despite being a good guy, she’s still at least a little unhinged, with a penchant for hiding grenades in stuffed animals. Famously, as part of a con against her ex, she at one point marries a mop. Think Harley Quinn meets Mai from Battle Royale.
The latest addition is likely to come as good news for fans of the franchise who were hoping to see Tiny Tina play a part in the movie, especially since she doesn’t appear until the second game. Does this mean we’ll see other fan-favorites, like Handsome Jack, play a part in the movie? Well, that remains to be seen, but on Pandora, anything can happen.
