PS Plus is in a Tricky Situation
The service offers players three free games a month from Sony’s ever-growing library, but the issue is that the PS5 is still relatively new, with only a few games available. Rather than only offering free copies of PS4 games, Sony are offering subscribers PS5 games as well, but whereas last month’s PS5 offering, Bugsnax, was offered at launch, Maneater – the second game offered – is one that many people would have purchased – and played – prior to it becoming free.
For those of you who’ve been living under a coral reef, Maneater is an open-world action role-playing game putting you in the fins of a bull shark – a Shark Playing Game, if you will. Your goal is to take revenge on the fisherman who disfigured you and killed your mother, but hey – why not cause as much chaos as possible in the meantime?
People purchasing a game only for it to be made free on PlayStation Plus is a point of frustration, but according to this Reddit post players are receiving automatic refunds as store credit – although it should be noted that the user is based in the US, and we haven’t received any confirmation that players in other markets will also be refunded.
It’s certainly a nice gesture on Sony’s part, but it’s worth noting that they likely won’t refund every single player – perhaps only those who purchased the game within the last few weeks will be refunded. If it’s true then it’s likely that the offer will still stand for at least the next few months, until the PS5 catalog is a bit larger. Once they can start offering older games for free on PlayStation Plus, Sony may decide to scale back their generosity.
I’m British so can someone please explain to me why Shark Week is such a big deal? Get in touch down in the comments.
