Ghost of Tsushima may be the new gold standard for Japanese-inspired action, but Sekiro: Shadows die twice isn’t going down without a fight. While it may not be as accessible as Sucker Punch’s game, FromSoftware’s soulslike offering has a lot to offer if you like your games punishingly difficult and filled with intricate mechanics.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice puts you in the shoes of Wolf, a shinobi and bodyguard to Kuro, a young immortal being hunted for his unique powers. The game differentiates itself from earlier soulslike games by scaling back the RPG mechanics and eliminating multiplayer, with a focus on whittling away an enemy’s defenses and opening them up for a killing blow rather than chipping away at them. It also stands out from Ghost of Tsushima with overt fantasy elements – albeit, while still being relatively grounded in comparison to FromSoftware’s other offerings.

The new Game of the Year update adds in some much sought after features, such as a boss rush mode (albeit it’s unknown at this point whether all bosses will be fought, given that the story branches towards the end and features different enemies) and player recordings, which allow you to record ghostly images of yourself performing tricky maneuvers or stealthing your way through a certain sequence to help other players. You can even reward players for helpful or just interesting recordings by way of gourd refills. The update also comes with a handful of cosmetics.
If you haven’t bought the game already, don’t worry – the update coincides with the release of the Game of the Year edition, and brings the base-game up to speed by offering the same features and upgrades that will be offered with the updated version of the game, so there’s never been a better time to begin your journey.
The update, and Game of the Year edition, drop on Wednesday, October 28th. Are you going to check it out? Let us know down in the comments.
