And It Looks Like It’ll Get Under Your Skin
Scorn has had a long production history, especially for the FPS genre, but while a lot of FPS games with such a long history – like Duke Nukem Forever – still managed to feel rushed, it looks like Scorn is still going to give us everything developers Ebb Software promised when the game first released and, while story details are still thin on the ground, it looks like we’re going to get an experience worth remembering.
Taking inspiration from the late great H.R. Giger – the creative mind behind the design of the Alien’s Xenomorph and Species villain, Sil, as well as his work on the video games Dark Seed and Dark Seed II. Giger was a pioneer of what’s come to be known as the biomechanical art style, melding organic and inorganic to create a unique and disturbing style. Scorn is taking that to the extreme, as you control a skinless humanoid exploring a world of metal, flesh, and bone. Even the weapons follow this theme, with both the pistol, shotgun, and grenade launcher shown in the above footage having a distinctly organic feel, right down to the shotgun ammo writhing as the character reloads. Interestingly it appears that the stock of the gun remains static regardless, with only the barrel (and ammo) changing. We also see the gun used to press certain switches, hinting at other uses for the weapon.

Of course, a game like this isn’t for the faint-hearted; even if it’s relatively light on the scares there’s still the visceral reaction to the sheer amount of gore you’ll experience in a world that fuses biological and mechanical materials, and the twisted world is filled with equally twisted inhabitants. What we might lose in terms of sheer terror, we may just gain in atmosphere.
Scorn drops in 2021 for the Xbox Series X.
