Caught Between Technology and Psychic Abilities
The strange yet familiar alternate future world of Scarlet Nexus has enthralled us from day one, but it’s taken a long time for us to get a deep dive into the game’s setting. This explanation trailer finally puts a lot of the teased worldbuilding into context. Scarlet Nexus begins in the city of Suoh, the leading city of New Himuka, a major cultural and economic hub that rests safely under the protection of the Other Suppression Force and its psychic Scarlet Guardians. Everyone in the city shares a psychic connection as their minds are all bonded to a huge network called Psynet–supposedly for the good of its residents, but we’re not so sure.
The trailer informs us that the OSF has been recruiting psychics for the last 560 years, placing Scarlet Nexus much further into the future than we thought. Protagonists Yuito Sumeragi and Kasane Randall use the Struggle Arms System to temporarily use the powers of their comrades through a brain-to-brain connection–the huge red cables we’ve seen sticking out of Yuito and Kasane’s backs are the virtual representation of that brain-to-brain connection. The trailer also reveals that Yuito had poor health as a child and was saved by a member of the OSF when the hospital he was staying at was attacked by Others.
Gameplay will feature patrols of abandoned areas, including the hospital from Yuito’s past, a subway system, and an abandoned satellite town, all of which are now haunted by Others. Speaking of Others, the trailer reveals that they attack humans because only the brains of living organisms can ease the pain of their twisted existences. Looking at those surreal enemy designs, we have to admit we’re not as surprised as we could be.
Scarlet Nexus will be released for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC on June 25th, 2021.
