Faithfulness is a Tricky Thing
If you deviate too much, you face a Lawnmower Man situation, where your book will be disowned by the original creator. If you stick too close to the source material, what’s the point? A lot of people try to meet in the middle, with mixed results; either they’ll miss a couple of key moments that inflame the fanbase – like Sirius giving Harry the two-way mirror in Harry Potter – or their attempts to mix original ideas with the source material creates a convoluted mess, like The Vampire’s Assistant, which doesn’t so much qualify as a movie as it does the insane ramblings of a drunkard who read the books as a child and described them to a movie executive.

The original Resident Evil falls into the latter camp. Apart from characters and concepts, the series tells a (mostly) original story which has little to do with the original games. Change a few names here and there and it wouldn’t even be classed as an adaptation.
We’ve already talked about how the reboot is shaping up to be a far more faithful adaptation, adapting the events of the first two games and including a spot-on recreation of the Racoon City Police Department and, potentially, fan-favorite villain Lisa Trevor. Now, we know that RPD isn’t the only iconic location getting the big screen treatment, as recreations of both Emmy’s Diner and Gun Shot Kendo have popped up on set.

Will we be seeing the sequences at the relative locations in the movie? Well, that depends. The truck crash that initially splits Leon and Claire up has seemingly been relocated to just outside the police station, according to set photos. In the original PS1 game Claire and Leon met at Emmy’s and the car crash seperated them outside the gun shop – an area not visited until later in the remake, It’s possible we’ll see a combination of both the canons, with the two initially meeting in Emmy’s before one (or both) visit the gun shop later on? According to this selfie, it’s likely that Leon will visit Emmy’s at some point, but unfortunately, we’ll need to wait until the movie releases to find out for sure.
