Pokemon Go Generated $1 Billion in 2020

According to Sensor Tower data, Niantic continues to raise the bar for Pokemon Go after another massively successful year. The augmented reality Pokemon mobile game generated a whopping $1 billion in player spending during 2020 between iOS and Android. Compared to the 2019 figures for Pokemon Go, this shows an 11% growth year-over-year. Lifetime installations for Pokemon Go have officially surpassed 600 million according to Sensor Tower, with one-sixth in the US alone. Pokemon Go is available right now on iOS and Android.

According to Sensor Tower data, PUBG Mobile is at the top when it comes to player spending on iOS and Android, while the online battle game Honor of Kings follows in second place. Pokemon Go saw more success in 2020 on the Google Play Store, accounting for around 54% of player spending in Pokemon Go which is comparable to last year’s statistics. The Google Play Store has generated $2.2 billion in lifetime Pokemon Go spending, while iOS has generated $1.9 billion.

The US market continues to be the most successful region for Pokemon Go, having contributed $1.5 billion since Pokemon Go released way back in 2016. Japan and Germany follow the US in second and third place respectively, contributing $1.3 billion and $238 million in lifetime spending. In 2019, Pokemon Go gamers spent $902 million, showing an increase year-over-year with the $1 billion generated this year.

Considering Pokemon Go made $1 billion just in 2020, the mobile game shows no signs of stopping despite regulations implemented by COVID-19. During lockdowns, Niantic was able to shift Pokemon Go dynamics in order to allow their fanbase to continue playing from home, and it’s likely that the first global Pokemon Go Fest helped contribute to expanding the game’s reach and appeal.
