With 55, 079 new cases, India’s COVID-19 tally has risen to over 27.02 lake cases, while the death count due to the highly contagious disease touched 51,797with 876 fresh fatalities, according to the Union health ministry figures this morning. Over 19.77 lakh coronavirus patients have recovered in the country so far; the recovery rate has climbed to 73.18 per cent. Maharashtra accounts for the maximum of cases (6,04,358), followed by Tamil Nadu (3,43,945), Andhra Pradesh (2,96,609), Karnataka (2,33,283), Uttar Pradesh (1,58,216) and Delhi (1,53,367). The total cases in the country has gone up to 27,02,742 in 201 days.

Tamil Nadu on Monday recorded 5,890 new coronavirus cases and 120 deaths, Around 800 liquor shops in Chennai have reopened today after nearly five months of closure during the lockdown. Tokens are to be issued to only 500 customers at each of these shops. Wearing of masks and social distancing have been made mandatory. Blaming liquor shops for spike in the number of Covid cases in districts where liquor sale resumed a couple of months ago, the opposition has slammed the AIADMK government, warning that this move will trigger yet another spike in Chennai where though the numbers have declined by 50 per cent, around a thousand people test positive everyday. Chennai has around 12,000 active cases and more than a lakh positive cases reported so far.

Andhra Pradesh has added 6,780 fresh coronavirus cases, taking its overall tally to 2.96 lakh on Monday, while 82 more deaths pushed the death count to 2,732.

Karnataka on Monday recorded 6,317 fresh COVID019 cases and 115 deaths. Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar Shaw is among those who tested positive on Monday. “I have added to the Covid count by testing positive. Mild symptoms n I hope it stays that way,” she tweeted on Monday night. Bengaluru Urban district has the biggest number of coronavirus cases in Karnataka with over 91,000 cases. In Karnataka, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah and state Health Minister B Sriramulu have recovered from COVID-19.

National capital Delhi has logged over 1.53 lakh cases of coronavirus, including 4,214 deaths, since the beginning of the pandemic. Delhi has reported 787 coronavirus cases and 18 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The country’s top medical body, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), said that the number of total samples tested for the infection have reached 3,09,41,264 up to Monday. Over 8.99 lakh samples were tested yesterday.

The Union Health Ministry has said that focused implementation of centre-led strategies has ensured prompt identification, timely isolation and effective clinical treatment, leading to reduced Case Fatality Rate. Thirty states and union territories performed better than the national average, according to the data shared by the ministry.
