Suit Up
The iconic, boundary-pushing FPS series Crysis has been the subject of a lot of speculation recently. Following the release of Crysis Remastered in 2020, not-so-cryptic tweets from the Crytek Twitter have hinted that they’ve been working on a similar remaster of Crysis 2 for current-gen consoles. However, today Crytek have revealed that they’ll be taking things a step further, remastering the full Crysis trilogy.
Hopefully, these remasters will fare better than Crysis Remastered, particularly when it comes to content – Crysis Remastered had swathes of content cut from the original game, including the entirety of its multiplayer mode and even a full level of the single player campaign, Ascension. With Crysis 2 receiving two pieces of DLC to add new multiplayer maps and weapons, and Crysis 3’s The Lost Island DLC featuring the original game’s setting in the form of 4 new multiplayer maps and adding new multiplayer modes, it seems that if the trend of removing multiplayer continues there could be a lot of content lost in the Remastered Trilogy.
Crysis Remastered was, unfortunately, an entirely cosmetic upgrade to the already stunning original game, with little to no gameplay fixes being added. Lighting was entirely reworked to give the game a more ‘realistic’ aesthetic, as well as better anti-aliasing and tessellation being added to clean up and polish the game’s graphics. A ray tracing option was also added in the PC version, but using it caused the remaster’s already inconsistent frame rate to drop significantly. Hopefully when Crysis Trilogy Remastered releases, Crytek will have learned from their previous mistakes and worked on the gameplay of these last-generation games.
The Crysis Remastered Trilogy Teaser Trailer shows off a few glimpses of the updated visuals, at least, though it’s not clear whether or not more work has been done on Crysis Remastered before adding it to this package.
The Crysis Remastered Trilogy is set to release on consoles and PC this autumn, with a focus on eighth-generation consoles (PS4, Xbox One, etc.).
