Leon Draisaitl collected a career-high six assists while Connor McDavid netted one goal and five points to lead the host Edmonton Oilers to a wild 8-5 victory over the Ottawa Senators in a 1980s-style throwback affair Sunday night.
Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner, a 2017 third-round draft pick, made 33 saves to win in his NHL debut.
McDavid has 22 points on the season, while Draisaitl is at 21, the most by an Oilers player through 11 games since Wayne Gretzky had 26 points in 1987-88. The NHL record for assists in a game is seven, set by Gretzky (three times) and Billy Taylor in 1947.
Draisaitl became the first NHL player to post six assists in a game since Philadelphia’s Eric Lindros on Feb. 26, 1997 and 29th in league history. Ottawa has lost eight straight (0-7-1) and surrendered four or more goals in each of its last seven.
Flyers 4, Islanders 3 (OT)
Kevin Hayes scored a power-play goal with 37.3 seconds remaining in overtime to lift host Philadelphia past New York.
It was the second overtime win for the Flyers in as many nights against the Islanders. Joel Farabee scored three goals for his first career hat trick, while James van Riemsdyk contributed four assists for the Flyers, who have won four straight. Flyers goaltender Brian Elliott stopped 33 shots.
Josh Bailey and Barzal each had a goal and an assist for the Islanders, who dropped their fifth in a row (0-3-2). Nick Leddy added one goal for New York, while Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin made 25 saves.
Hurricanes 4, Stars 3 (SO)
Vincent Trocheck scored in a shootout to lift Carolina to a victory over Dallas in Raleigh, N.C.
Jordan Staal led the Hurricanes with a goal and an assist, while Brock McGinn and Nino Niederreiter each scored once.
The Stars got a goal and an assist from Jamie Benn, who returned to the lineup after missing three games with a lower-body injury. Jamie Oleksiak and Andrew Cogliano added a goal each for the Stars.
Blackhawks 3, Blue Jackets 1
Pius Suter scored the go-ahead goal 7:41 into the third period to lift host Chicago to a victory over Columbus.
Philipp Kurashev and Patrick Kane collected a goal and an assist apiece for the Blackhawks, who snapped a three-game skid (0-1-2) and avenged a 2-1 setback to Columbus on Friday.
Kevin Lankinen made 32 saves to secure Chicago’s first win since a 6-2 romp over the Detroit Red Wings last Sunday. Columbus goaltender Elvis Merzlikins misplayed the puck on two occasions in the third period, with the miscues directly leading to a pair of goals. Boone Jenner scored late in the first period for the Blue Jackets, who saw their seven-game point streak (4-0-3) come to a halt.
Devils 5, Sabres 3
Michael McLeod and Miles Wood each scored twice as visiting New Jersey snapped a three-game skid with a win over Buffalo.
McLeod, who had one goal in his previous 41 career NHL games, muscled the puck past Carter Hutton (32 saves) with 9:20 left in the third period to give New Jersey a 4-3 lead. Wood also recorded an assist as the Devils rebounded from Saturday’s 4-3 shootout loss to the Sabres by halting an 0-2-1 slide.
Defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen had a goal with an assist while captain Jack Eichel and Victor Olofsson each recorded two assists for Buffalo, which had earned at least one point in five straight contests (3-0-2).
Wild 4, Avalanche 3 (OT)
Jonas Brodin scored 18 seconds into overtime, and Minnesota beat Colorado in Saint Paul, Minn., with the Avalanche losing All-Star Nathan MacKinnon after two periods.
Victor Rask scored twice, Jordan Greenway had a goal and an assist and Joel Eriksson Ek had two assists for the Wild. Cam Talbot had 22 saves in his return to the crease, his previous game on Jan. 22 when he suffered a lower-body injury.
Joonas Donskoi, Cale Makar and Brandon Saad scored and Hunter Miska stopped 29 shots for the Avalanche, who lost another player to injury. MacKinnon had two assists for Colorado before leaving with a lower-body injury, departing after playing the first two periods.
Panthers 3, Red Wings 2
Patric Hornqvist, Aaron Ekblad and Carter Verhaeghe scored one goal apiece and visiting Florida collected its second victory in as many nights over Detroit.
Florida has notched 11 of a possible 12 points in its six games this season. Chris Driedger made 32 saves, including nine on Red Wings power plays. The Panthers won the first game, 3-2, in overtime on Saturday.
Detroit has gone winless in its last six games (0-4-2). Dylan Larkin and Anthony Mantha scored the Red Wings’ goals, while Thomas Greiss made 27 saves. Tyler Bertuzzi, who usually skates with that duo on the first line, missed the game with an upper-body injury.
Blues 4, Ducks 1
First St. Louis won on the lead, then it triumphed off the pace, defeating Anaheim to complete a successful back-to-back set between the teams at Anaheim, Calif.
The Blues used second-period goals from Brayden Schenn and Sammy Blais to overcome an early deficit and win one day after they blitzed the Ducks right from the start in a 6-1 victory. Schenn finished with two goals in the Blues’ third straight win.
The Ducks had a first-period goal from Jakob Silfverberg, but lost their third consecutive game and fell to 2-3-1 at home. John Gibson made 19 saves for the Ducks in his third loss in a row after the Ducks earned a point in his first three games.
