Nature, You Scary
Whenever you are trying to resurrect the tale of a phenomenon, it has to be the “son of”. Son of Megalodon, Son of Loch Ness, Son of Sasquatch. I might be making those up, but it’s true. Sons of the Forest is the follow-up to 2018’s The Forest, but it is back with a vengeance. Thankfully, so is the player. The reveal at the 2019 Game Awards showed the return to the forest-island, but this time the player is there on a mission. Instead of being a regular father on a plane with his son, we will now be taking on the role of a trained military fighter.
It’s been a year since we first laid eyes on Sons of the Forest, but we are getting a slightly better look at we can expect from the sequel. It is unclear if the player is en route to the forest with the intent on hunting its inhabitants, but much like the first game, their ride is taken down and they are stranded there. Also like the first game, we will have to survive by collecting the island’s natural resources, building shelter, and finding or hunting for food. Oh, and you’ll have to watch out for the locals.
There are a few new mechanics in this new trailer. For one, players will be granted a more useful navigation tool, which looks like a transponder of sorts. They will also be able to dig with a shovel. It’s unclear what purpose that will serve, whether it is used for collecting soil, unearthing treasure, or digging traps. It also appears that there will be a bigger focus on combat and stealth, since the player is seen using a pistol. The stealth element seems likely since the player will apparently find a mask that island mutants are also seen wearing. Hopefully, that means they will leave you alone more. I don’t know about everyone else, but your ol’ pal Zane got stomped by the mutants pretty quickly in the first game. Sons of the Forest is expected to launch in 2021.
