Mohamed Salah‘s former teammate, Mohamed Aboutrika, has claimed that the winger is “unhappy” at Liverpool after a recent phone call between the pair.
Aboutrika, one of the greatest players in Egypt’s history, claimed that Salah was irked at Jurgen Klopp‘s decision to overlook him for the captaincy in Liverpool’s Champions League tie against Midtjylland.
In a recent interview with Spanish publication AS, Salah stoked speculation over his future by refusing to rule out a move to Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Aboutrika told beIN Sports: “I called Salah about his situation at Liverpool and he is upset, but that would never affect his performance on the field.
“I know that Salah is not happy in Liverpool, he told me the reasons why he is not happy but they are secrets and I cannot talk about it in public.
“One of the reasons that made Salah angry was that he was not the captain against Midtjylland.
“If Salah was a player at Real Madrid or Barcelona, and playing at the same level as Liverpool, he would’ve won the Ballon d’Or, and it is normal for a Spanish newspaper to ask Salah about Real Madrid and Barcelona.
“In my opinion, Liverpool are considering selling Salah for economic purposes. I do not have any influence over Salah’s decisions, he is my friend and brother, and he is smart enough to know what is best for him.”
During the interview with AS, Salah spoke publicly about his frustration at Klopp deciding to give the captaincy to Trent Alexander-Arnold in the absence of Jordan Henderson and James Milner.
“Honestly, I was very disappointed. I was hoping to be the captain, but it’s a coach’s decision. I accept it,” Salah said, before claiming that his future at Liverpool was “a tough one but right now everything is in the club’s hands”.
