YouTubers Watched a Lot of Minecraft in 2020
YouTube has officially confirmed that Minecraft is the most-watched game of 2020, edging out others such as Fortnite and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. YouTube confirmed the impressive Minecraft feat during a recent blog, saying that it has reached 100 billion hours watched across over 40 million active channels. This accounts for around 201 billion views over 2020, triple second place position Roblox which drew in 75 billion views. Minecraft is available right now for last-gen consoles, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, mobile, PC, and through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
While Roblox managed to draw in a respectable 75 billion views next to Minecraft’s massive 201 billion views, some noteworthy games were still mentioned in YouTube’s recent blog. Garena Free Fire, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Fortnite were all name-dropped. Epic Games’ battle royale apparently failed to reach 70 billion views throughout 2020, though the recent release of Chapter 2 Season 5 could boost these numbers for the final month of the year. Minecraft drew in a whopping 40% of the views from all top five games combined despite having released over a decade ago.
Minecraft is dominating hours watched on-demand, but fans of the creative game might wonder how it stands with live broadcast viewership. Minecraft retains the number one position for live broadcasts as well, with Garena Free Fire as the second most-watched, and Roblox falling to the fifth spot. This viewership is consistent with Twitch numbers as well, showing that Minecraft remains relevant across the board. It’s quite a coincidence that Minecraft viewership increased across the board, however, around the same time that PewDiePie returned to the game.
