The adaptation of the comic The Magic Order is back in active development after being put on hold last year, says its creator, Mark Millar.
With Millar’s Jupiter’s Legacy bowing on Netflix Friday, the creator known for titles such as Kingsman and Kick-Ass shared an update on his slate of films and TV shows set up at Netflix, which purchased his company Millarworld in 2017.
Magic Order was in pre-production and gearing up to shoot in Prague when COVID-19 hit the world. Netflix took the opportunity to put the project on hold and do a creative re-evaluation.
“Some time away has given us a chance to come back with a completely fresh look at the material, and we should be getting into our new writers’ room very shortly,” Millar said in a blog post published Thursday.
Millar also revealed that the comic version of Magic Order continues this fall with volumes two and three of the series, which he is writing. Stuart Immonen (The Amazing Spider-Man) provides art for the second volume, with Gigi Cavenago joining for volume three.
Meanwhile, his Super Crooks TV series will debut this later year after getting a first-look in June at the French-based animation festival Annecy.
“This superpowered heist comic about eight super-villains is jam-packed with action and told in 13 30-minute episodes lushly produced by Bones.inc.” wrote Millar. “Fans will be able to catch the first glimpse of this highly anticipated series at the Annecy Festival this June.“
The comic book creator is also developing a new spy series as both a comic and a TV show, although he was mum on creative details.
“We’re hard at work on a six-episode live-action spy series right now, my first since Kingsman, but a very different kind of property,” wrote Millar. “The writer is someone I’ve been a massive fan of for two decades, and he was the only person I approached. This has the potential to be one of the biggest franchises I’ve ever created.”
These projects join a slate that includes an American Jesus TV show, as well as a Reborn film, from filmmaker Chris McKay, producer Sandra Bullock and writer Bek Smith. Other films in the works include Empress, Huck, Sharkey The Bounty Hunter and Prodigy.
Jupiter’s Legacy, the first Millarworld project to debut on Netflix, stars Josh Duhamel, Leslie Bibb, Ben Daniels, Elena Kampouris, Andrew Horton, Mike Wade and Matt Lanter.
