Iran has executed a wrestler accused of homicide after he took half in antigovernment protests two years in the past, the state information media reported on Saturday.
The wrestler, Navid Afkari, 27, was executed on Saturday morning at a jail within the southern metropolis of Shiraz, judicial officers have been quoted as telling state media. He was accused of fatally stabbing a water-utility employee amid the turmoil within the streets of his dwelling metropolis, Shiraz, which was a middle of antigovernment protests that swept the country in 2018.
He was convicted and given two loss of life sentences.
Worldwide sports activities teams had lately mounted a last-ditch marketing campaign for clemency. The fees towards him have been met with widespread skepticism in Iran and overseas, with many authorities critics saying he was getting used for instance to silence dissent.
