A Return to the Core of Survival Horror
There are few things more unsettling than an abandoned amusement park. The rotting carpets, the crumbling ceilings, the silent leering grins of statues… it all has a way of getting into your head. Nobody in their right mind would go to a place like that… or so we’d like to believe, but if this pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that people will do whatever they want to. Especially if they think they have a good reason. Case in point, Today Is My Birthday follows Thomas Wilkes, a young man who’s recently lost his father and just wants to spend one last birthday at Wonder Park, the place where his father used to work. Unfortunately, Wonder Park isn’t quite as empty as he assumed it was. Things go badly for him.
Thomas quickly finds himself slinking down hallways and through empty courtyards, trying not to draw attention to himself. There’s something going on in the ruins of the park. A trafficking operation? Human experimentation? This early on, it’s impossible to say, but one way or another, Thomas is going to find out. And so are we.
The game features an immersive first-person perspective, story progression which requires the player to pay close attention to their surroundings, creepy art design, and a haunting soundtrack. Better yet, it doesn’t rely on jump scares to keep you on the edge of your seat–why would it have to when the environment is so viscerally eerie? Watching Thomas make his way through the claustrophobic halls, camera in hand, is a nail-biting experience. And that’s just the trailer. We can’t wait to find out how stressful the full game will be.
Today Is My Birthday will be released on October 30th on Steam.
