Epic Games’ Hyprsense Focuses on Facial Expressions
Epic Games has officially acquired Hyprsense, a company that animates your facial expressions. Hyprsense released an avatar-based video chat app for OBS/Zoom in open beta back in September, but it’s no longer available. Epic Games may be looking to implement the Hyprsense facial expression technology into their massively popular Fortnite battle royale. Fortnite is available right now for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, and Mobile, with Chapter 2 Season 4 coming to a close on December 1st.
Recently, Epic Games and Houseparty teamed up to allow Fortnite fans to facetime each other in a chat room while playing Fortnite, and fans who linked their Epic Games and Houseparty accounts were rewarded with an awesome in-game weapon wrap for Fortnite. If Epic Games is interested in utilizing the front-facing camera of cellphones to read facial expressions utilizing Hyprsense, it’s entirely possible that they could soon take your facial expression and put it on your in-game avatar.
Since Epic Games started hosting concerts in Party Royale mode, the game mode has been home to film premiers, protests, and more, and it looks like Epic Games is looking at more ways to blur the line between reality and their massive battle royale: Fortnite. In addition to acting as a video game through battle royale and Save the World, Fortnite continues to act as a platform through Party Royale. “Bringing on the Hyprsense team enables us to approach the goal of giving all creators full control over expressing their vision down to the smallest nuance,” said Epic Games CTO Kim Libreri.
