A new video has surfaced online showing off a Tesla owner who’s sitting in the back seat of his car while it drives itself down a city street.
Tesla’s autopilot feature has come under some scrutiny lately as it came to light that Tesla owners can, with a little bit of preparation, get their cars to drive themselves without anyone in the driver’s seat.
Beyond that, there have also been some people stating that the Autopilot naming scheme Tesla uses for its driver-assistance programs is a little unclear since it sort of implies that the car can drive itself.
Overall, this problem of people testing out how well their cars can drive themselves isn’t really on Tesla’s shoulders since for someone to be in the backseat, they would need to put a small weight on the steering wheel and the driver’s seat to trick the car into thinking it still has a human ready to take over in case of a crash, which suggests that the people who are testing this out are doing so very purposefully.
Still, it’s pretty appalling to see someone put their own life at risk like this and the lives of everyone else on the road.
What is good to note is that other car manufacturers like Ford and GM use a small camera that can tell when a driver is looking at the road, which indicates that most other car manufacturers are looking to implement their own driver assistance programs in a way that’s harder to fool.
