Say That 10 Times Fast
We are coming up on an unfortunate anniversary: the day that COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic. For many of us, it has been almost a year since we began working from home, regularly wearing masks outside, and doing many of our socializing digitally. Though vaccine distribution is starting to roll out, we are still very much in the midst of this pandemic. That being said, why the eff are we still thinking that we will be having in-person gatherings like video game competitions anytime soon? Capcom has recently announced that the Capcom Cup will be cancelled this year. Yeah, no duh.
The Capcom Cup 2020 and Street Fighter League World Championship were scheduled to take place between February 19th and 21st in Punta Cana this year. Just yesterday, Capcom announced that they would be cancelled and would be replaced by virtual events in the future. When events began getting cancelled this time last year, people were understandably disappointed, but now they are getting cancelled and we are kind of surprised they were planned at all. Capcom did have COVID-19 precautions and protocols put in place and posted for transparency, but with things being worse than ever, it is just too much of a liability for an in-person competition.
Obviously, Capcom was being optimistic when planning this event, but with so many events before this being moved to online only incarnations, it is kind of hard to act blindsided by this. There is no word yet of when the Capcom Cup is being rescheduled, but with many fans being upset with the netcode needed for online games, it seems that Capcom has its work cut out for them if they were to have an online tournament.
Are you disappointed with this cancellation? Let us know in the comments below.
