January 21st Can’t Come Fast Enough
Resident Evil is experiencing a renaissance, and we’re here for it. As the games slowly got more and more action-focused, the movies similarly began to abandon the source material, ignoring the storyline and plot in favor of featuring different characters from the game who each inexplicably survived the apocalypse and yet find themselves facing some great danger just as heroine Alice turns up. The swing back to focused, claustrophobic horror in Resident Evil 7 was a welcome one, and the recent remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3, for all their problems, reminded players that this is a franchise that had a history of getting it right, so we should forgive it when it has a bad day.
Today’s announcement of the Resident Evil Showcase promises us a glimpse of the future of the franchise: primarily, more information on the next main-series entry, Resident Evil: Village, which sees returning hero Ethan investigating an isolated village beset by what look to be supernatural monsters, albeit ones which will likely turn out to be suffering from some new disease. In addition to a new trailer, we’ll be getting our first extended look at the gameplay. The video shows us a couple of interesting teasers, including multiple werewolf-like creatures attacking in tandem with a hammer-wielding giant and an enemy who looks to be made of flies or moths.
What else can we expect? Well, news about the upcoming movie reboot and animated series are likely, and Capcom’s recent leaks have provided a wealth of information about upcoming games – including one featuring long-absent heroine Rebecca Chambers – and let’s not forget the long-standing rumors about a Resident Evil 4 remake – a game which, like Village, is set in a remote village, and as such can use many of the same assets, making it an attractive option.
