The latest news to leak out about the newest Call of Duty game is that it’s going to be a massive download.
On current generation consoles like the PS4 and the Xbox One, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War takes up roughly 95GB of storage at launch. The next-gen version of the game comes in at around 135GB on average, meaning that a single game is going to take up over a third of your hard drive if you opted for the Xbox Series S.
Call of Duty has been getting a bad rap lately for its massive game files, with COD: Modern Warefare reaching up to 200GB on PC. However, after that, Activision made it so PC players can install specific parts of the game to save their precious hard drive space.
This multi-part-download model is being carried forward, but it appears that you’ll only be able to delete chunks of the game after you initially download them. The blog post says, “console players can choose to uninstall specific game mode packs, such as for Campaign or Zombies, to reduce the game’s overall file size. This content can be managed in-game through the “Account & Network” section of the Settings menu.”
The exact install sizes are:
- PlayStation 4 – 95GB
- Xbox One – 93GB
- PlayStation 5 – 133GB
- Xbox Series X/S – 136GB
- PC – 35 GB (Multiplayer Only) / 82GB (Full Game) / 125GB (Full Game on Ultra Graphics)
While the super large files are a news-worthy story today, I have a hunch that massive install sizes of over 100GB are going to become the norm as we move further into the next generation of game consoles.
