5 Things That Make Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life an Epic Crossover Experience

If You Are A Pirate’s of the Caribbean Fan, Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life is a Must

One of the big surprises from E3 2021 this past week came from Rare. Last Sunday, during E3 2021’s Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, it was revealed that Captain Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones are coming to Sea of Thieves. A new trailer was released which showed us a glimpse of some new enemies, new cosmetics, and some creepy new Pirates of the Caribbean-themed areas. It all looked fantastic and injects some new life into a game that has steadily gained traction since its launch.

This past week, COGconnected was invited to a Digital Event where we got an early look at “Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life”. The event included a 30-minute presentation and a live Q&A with a couple of Rare’s top dogs: Mike Chapman, Creative Director, and Joe Neate, Executive Producer. Full disclosure, I am not an avid Sea of Thieves player by any stretch of the imagination, but ‘oh my goodness’ A Pirate’s Life looks amazing, and I’m fully onboard come June 22. Here are 5 things that really stood out for me:

Pirates of the Caribbean Theme Park

A Pirate’s Life pays tribute to all five Pirate’s of the Caribbean movies but also the Disney attraction. The Disneyland/Disneyworld Pirates of the Caribbean ride is easily one of my favorite rides. Some of those set pieces from the ride will be featured in the game. How cool is that? Rare puts a creative twist on these attractions, but you will absolutely see (and hear) some of these familiar locations from the attraction in the game. You’ll even hear that deep infamous “Dead Men Tell No Tales” voice at various points when you move through those grotto caves. For many, including me, this will provide a fabulous nostalgic feeling.

They Nailed Jack Sparrow

Sure, it’s a bit of a bummer we can’t play as Captain Jack Sparrow (yet) but watching his character in the Sea of Thieves world put a smile on my face. All of Jack Sparrow’s mannerisms, his quirky style, and often unpredictable behavior is wonderfully recreated. His character animations are spot-on and look brilliant.

Not to mention, Jack Sparrow’s voice is terrifically recreated. Jared Butler who does Sparrow’s voice in the Kingdom Hearts game does an amazing job. His passion for the character really comes through. He does a nice job with Jack Sparrow’s humor as well. It really comes through.

Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me)

One little interesting little nugget from the Digital Event we discovered is that you can unlock ‘Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me)’ song by completing all the tall tales from The Pirate’s Life update. Once you complete all the tales and objectives, this song acts as a reward and then becomes playable on your in-game instruments. So if you run into anyone during the game who is playing the song, you know they completed A Pirate’s Life. A nice little reward for polishing everything off.

Not A Timed Event

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life is around to stay and will not be available for merely a limited time. This is great news. This update featuring spooky new locations, including a supernatural realm and underwater world, will stick around for an indefinite period of time according to the dev team. So there is no real rush to jump in if you don’t have time this month, next month, or this year. New and old players can experience The Pirate’s of the Caribbean world whenever they are ready. I love this!

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life

It’s Free & Accessible to Newcomers

New players will be able to access A Pirate’s Life immediately. You won’t have to grind your way up to gain access. A lot has changed since Sea of Thieves first launched and there will still be a bit of a learning curve for newbies. Yet, new players will be able to jump in, play the maiden voyage which acts as a tutorial, and then start the Pirate’s experience straight at the castaway. Everything is accessible immediately from the outpost. And did I mention this update is free? Who doesn’t love free?

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life is going to feature a ton of cinematics. All the content can be experienced with your friends or solo. The difficulty and AI is scaled to the size of your crew. This truly feels like an epic crossover and the 20 million people of so who play Sea of Thieves should really enjoy what they’ll experience here. And I haven’t even touched on the new storylines.

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life arrives on June 22 as a free update and is available on Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, and is included as part of a Xbox Game Pass subscription.

Thank you for keeping it locked on COGconnected.
